Duncan Creek Water Quality Monitoring Project
Project Goals

The Duncan Creek Watershed was identified by the Department of Natural Resources as a priority watershed in 1991.  To be identified as such indicates that there is sufficient community interest in maintaining or improving local water quality and that, without that effort, there is reason to believe degradation will take place.  The key reason for developing a high school stream quality monitoring effort was to raise awareness for environmental stewardship among future decision makers.  The local citizen advisory group believed that this is a critical component of long term protection and preservation of our streams.  Further, the group contends that collecting and analyzing data at local stream sites and collaborating with others in the watershed will increase students understanding and connection to their local resources and will develop a more concerned and knowledgeable citizenry.

Program Goals:

To raise student awareness and appreciation of land and water resources in the basin.
To increase student knowledge of local environmental issues including non-point pollution sources and land use activities which degrade the resources.
To establish a network of high schools collecting and reporting water quality data.
To develop a partnership between high schools and various government agencies.
To develop a sense of community and responsibility toward the local watershed.
To develop a citizenry who is able to take action and responsible steps in resolving complex socio-environmental issues.
